Melissa Suffield 'bullied': 'I was scared for my life'

Former EastEnders star Melissa Suffield has revealed she was bullied during her time on the soap.

The actress, who played Lucy Beale from the age of 11, admitted that she faced a barrage of threats and foul-mouthed abuse on her way to work everyday.

"I was relentlessly bullied by a group of girls – it was systematic, grim and really nasty," she said to The Mirror.

"I was spat at and got chased home also. God knows what would have happened if they had caught up with me.

"It was so alien and strange and I tried to put on a brave face – I didn't know how to deal with it."

Suffield, who has never spoken out about her bullying ordeal before, believes that her attackers were confusing her with her troubled screen character.

"They were like, 'There's Luce, let's get her'. It was so upsetting and so frequent. I was pushed nearly on to the [train] tracks. I feared for my life," she recalled.

"I was genuinely terrified. I tried to put on a brave face but inside I was petrified. I thought they wanted to kill me."
